Session Information

Radar scattering of random media has been an extensive research subject for its wide applications. It has been a common practice to retrieve, by analyzing the sensitivity of the scattering behavior and mechanisms, the geophysical parameters of interest from the scattering and emission measurements. The scattering behavior of random media such as vegetation, snow, ice, soil, ocean, and particulate matter plays a central role in interpreting and modeling radar measurements. However, radar scattering is a complex process, and many research works deal with the nuanced characterization of the reflecting media, which is generally statistically anisotropic and electromagnetically inhomogeneous. Understanding and modeling these complex interactions is crucial for various scientific, environmental, and defense applications. This special session brings together researchers working on theoretical, numerical, and experimental advances in radar scattering from random media and novel applications that leverage these developments.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
  • Electromagnetic modeling of wave interactions with random and complex media
  • Polarimetric, interferometric, and tomographic radar signatures of random media
  • Coherent and incoherent scattering models
  • Machine learning and data-driven approaches to characterize and retrieve media properties
  • Experimental and field validation of scattering models
The session contains 8-10 presentations, with the following preliminary invited speakers. The rest is open for submission.
1. Zhihuo Xu, Nanyang Technical University, Singapore
2. Cheng-Yen Chiang, National Taipei University of Science and Technology, Taiwan
3. Hirokazu Kobayashi, Sogo Electronics Inc., Japan
4. Kun-Shan Chen, Nanjing University, China
5. Saibun Tjuatja, University of Texas at Arlington, USA
6. Zhen Xu, Hohai University, China
