Session Information

Various coupling regimes between the light field and quantum emitters (QE) are of current interest. This includes the subject of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, which is related to strong atom-field coupling effects in microresonators. Resonant chiral and resonant magnetoelectric (ME) responses are of the topical interest in modern metamaterial science. Chiral and ME meta-atoms are considered as quantum systems. A chiral QE is one whose transition between its ground and excited levels is quantified by a combination of collinear electric and magnetic dipole moments. In chiral polaritonics, the basic physical concepts underlying the chirality of matter and the chirality of electromagnetic (EM) field are analyzed. An extension of the ME effect to the dynamical region is an important concept that employs the ME susceptibility to produce unconventional EM responses. With symmetry breaking effects inside the ME resonator, nontrivial symmetry breakings can be observed in the vacuum region near this resonator. This determines the properties of ME near fields. Rotating fields of ME particles can generate changes in momentum of zero-point fluctuations. Due to the ME energy, the entire EM continuum is strongly modified both in the near-field and far-field regions. The fundamental study of the interaction of a resonant point ME scatterer with EM radiation constitutes a new field of research, which we call ME quantum electrodynamics.
The purpose of this session is to discuss various aspects of field-matter interaction in metamaterial structures from the point of view of macroscopic effects of quantum electrodynamics.

This PIERS session is organized as part of an initiative to support the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025). The IYQ 2025 (https://quantum2025.org/en/) is proclaimed by the United Nations in recognition of 100 years of development of quantum science. The organizer of the session is encouraged by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, to celebrate and promote IYQ at this meeting.
